Brainard Lake Surprise Proposal Photos | Elena and Michael

Summertime Surprise Proposal Photos at Brainard Lake

Last July, I had the pleasure of capturing Michael’s surprise proposal to Elena at Brainard Lake in Ward, CO. They were vacationing in Colorado and Michael wanted to pop the question to Elena during their trip. On the day of the proposal, we had beautiful weather and a gorgeous mountain sunset. Elena was completely surprised and enthusiastically said yes with Michael popped the question.

When Michael first contacted me, originally he was hoping to propose in Rocky Mountain National Park at an alpine lake. Since he contacted me about 2 weeks out our chances of getting into Rocky Mountain National Park during the peak season on a weekend at his preferred time were pretty slim. I like to recommend to folks Brainard Lake as an alternative to Rocky Mountain National Park who are looking for alpine lake views in the summer and fall. The views are just as stunning as RMNP and it is way less crowded. For photos, I love to take pictures in front of the lake, in the open field next to the lake and all of the wooded areas surrounding the lake. Brainard Lake is absolutely stunning at sunset since the sun sets behind the mountains so I recommend if you want to schedule your photo shoot there, schedule it for sunset. There is also an abundance of wildlife in the area and if you are lucky you may even see a moose during your photoshoot.

Brainard Lake becomes accessible in June and stays that way until about late October to early December before it is closed down for the snowy season in the mountains. It is at an elevation of over a little 10,000 ft and pretty far into the summer there are usually snow-capped mountains. Travel-wise, it is about an hour and a half from Denver and 30 minutes away from Rocky Mountain National Park. Day use parking reservations with timed entry go on sale at the end of May and are continually released on a 15-day rolling window which makes it pretty easy to make reservations. They are very reasonably priced too at $14 per car. I could not recommend Brainard Lake more as a standalone location on its own or an alternative to Rocky Mountain National Park!
